A very important part of making a good income with AdSense, is to keep an eye at your stats. Why? Well - first of all you obviously want to know how much money you're making - but more importantly, when you make changes to your website, you want to know what effect it has on your earnings.
Altering the positioning, layout and colouring of your AdSense units will directly impact the behaviour of your visitors. Was it a change for the better? Or do you need to put things back to the way they were? Your stats will make this clear to you. You'll be able to tell from your click through rate - and more importantly - your revenues.
In other words - you want to check your stats regularly. Now - I'm not trying to get you to log in every two hours to check them - although you'll probably do this when you start out anyway. No - you need to log in and check your stats about a week after you have made a change to the way your site looks, and see if you made more money - or less.
Your stats won't, however, tell you everything. Sure - they'll tell you whether or not you've made more money over the last week - compared to the week before. But they won't tell you what you could try to do, in order to make more money next week! So, if you really want to find out what your visitors are up to - and get more of them to do what you want them to do (ie. click your ads) - you're going to need some extra tools.
There are two tools in particular that you don't want to be without:
A Tracking Program will give you lots of very useful information, such as where your visitors are coming from, where your clicks are coming from and what keywords your biggest clickers were searching for when they arrived at your site from a search engine. The internet is packed with tracking tools for AdSense, and to be quite honest, a few of them are rather useless. Others you wouldn't want to live without. The rule of thumb is - you get what you pay for! Keep this in mind when shopping around.
Once you have got your information together, it's not difficult to use various AdSense strategies to optimize your site, and get more visitors clicking on your highest paying ads.
A Graph Builder is a great tool - particularly if you're not good with figures. Basically, what they do is they give you a visual analysis of your stats, and make it easier to compare how your click-through-rate is changing, and how this affect your revenue etc.
Some of the best tracking programs out there include this option, but even if you've bought the wrong one, downloading a graph builder is well worth it.
Once you learn to read your stats, and make the right changes accordingly, it becomes very addictive. A lot of extra revenue can be extracted from learning how to read and analyse your AdSense stats correctly - as a matter of fact - it can be the difference between success or failure.
