Earlier today a client of mine asked me this question, and I thought it might actually answer questions for many of you who are trying to decide if you want to go to an upcoming marketing seminar.
One thing I want to differentiate here is between a seminar and a bootcamp.
Generally, a seminar has a number of different speakers, and those speakers will each talk for an hour or two. They generally give you good information, but they are there to also sell you one of their own products. Unless the seminar has a very high price tag, this is very generally the format.
A bootcamp or workshop is generally hands on, where you actually perform some of the steps involved, and learn hands on how to do things according to the topic of the bootcamp.
So these guidelines are referring to choosing to go to a marketing seminar:
1) Do not go if you are looking for great step by step instructions on how to do things - you will probably find that the information is more geared towards showing you the basics - and then they try to sell you the more advanced kit that teaches you exactly how to do it.
2) That said, you can get some GREAT ideas at one of those - and if you implement just one idea - and it increases your income by the price of the seminar - then you are ahead.
3) Do go if you are willing to network. Keep in mind, everyone there is proven willing to spend money on their business, their learning, and their coaching - and long term, could be great contacts - both for coaching clients and for jv opportunities.
