Non Profit Jobs

Ellen is graduating in Fall 2006 and has plans to work with a non-profit organization and, in her words, “contribute to the community and at same time enjoy an informal work environment.” There are others like her wanting to have full-time employment, volunteer opportunities or a fellowship in any leading non-profit organization. To them, salary is not a criterion, but should be sufficient to cover essential needs. Similarly, a job position could be account or administrative assistants, fund raising or volunteer, and part- or full-time work identifying with their skills and studies.

Ellen had a clear idea, unlike some of her friends, of what she needed, having already worked as a summer intern in a non-governmental organization in her hometown. In college she was active in programs and associations working for community welfare. Some of us are under misconceptions about the work environment being laid back or different from regular profit-making concerns. It is the other way around, as workers in a non-profit organization are dedicated towards whatever they are doing; the difference is in the flexibility towards a particular task. Since profit is not a criterion, non-profit jobs require a clearer approach to work and the implementation of programs.

For a graduate seriously looking at non-profit jobs, the best places to check them out are Volunteer and Public Service offices, the Internet and alumni networks. International agencies require work experience for salaried positions. But you can join as an intern or volunteer, and work your way through the organization. Ellen preferred an organization from within her state and approached her previous employer. Volunteer and internship experiences are valued by prospective employers. Another plus point in her resume was her credits in business and nonprofit management.

Within a week Ellen was asked to join, and anticipated a fulfilling experience towards community welfare, albeit from behind a desk.
